Kahawai Doomed?

Stop the Madness!!

The Ministry of Fisheries (MFish) are going to ignore the public’s concerns about kahawai. This will result in our kahawai fishery as we once knew it being lost forever. This is theft – the dishonest taking of a public resource with no intention of returning it.

  • Mismanagement of kahawai has seen a decline in numbers and size of fish available.
  • Non-commercial fishers want access to a healthy kahawai fishery restored for customary and recreational use.
  • The low value commercial use of kahawai for catfood, fishmeal and cray bait is unacceptable.
  • The Ministry should discount the targeted purse seine catch history of kahawai before deciding how much quota should be given to commercial fishers.
  • The non-commercial sector acknowledge the unavoidable bycatch of kahawai.
  • The Minister of Fisheries should acknowledge the importance of kahawai to the public by allowing for a rebuild of the kahawai stocks.
